Born in Bombay, India, on 29 April 1936. He was kondaktor orchestra, music director of Los Angeles PhilharmonicOrchestra (1962-78), New York Philharmonic Orchestra (1978-91), and the Israel Philharmonic (from1968).

His father, Mehli Mehta, is a violinist, who was one of the founders of Bombay-String Quartet and the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. Zubin Mehta underwent his musical studies at the Vienna Academy of Music.

In 1958 he became the first champion Liverpool International Conductor's Competition and became kondaktor assistant at Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for one year.

From 1961 to 1967, he became music director of the Montreal Symphony. That opportunity has to kondaktor first and directly, in two major North American orchestras.

In 1968, he became head of the music advisor for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. And in 1978, Mehta replaces Pierre Boulez, as music director at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He expressed interest in specials on music late Romantic and early modern composers.
