Kirk became interested in music after often hearing his brother play the music of Kiss, UFO, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix. After hearing the guitar Ace Frehley, he was immediately infatuated with music and then buy the album Kiss Kiss. That makes it began studying the guitar at the age of 15 years. He began fiddling with his guitar diligently to get the sound to suit his wishes.
Van Halen popular in America in 1978 apparently also the Kirk effect. He became a passion to form a rock band called Exodus. Then in April 1983, Kirk gets a call from James Hetfield (Metallica guitarist and vocalist) who wants the Kirk immediately flew to New York to audition new Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine replace outgoing (later form Megadeth). Kirk came out from California and left for New York. Finally Kirk joined James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Cliff Burton in Metallica.

After the release of Kill 'Em All, Kirk then studied guitar with guitar maestro who later also became one of the world's leading guitar god Joe Satriani in Beerklee College of Music.
